Buying watches from Japan: proxy, shipping and import-cost guide

Plan a Japanese watch purchase by comparing marketplace condition, proxy fees, international shipping, insurance and destination import charges.

Separate authenticity, condition and delivery cover

Record the reference, movement, case material, service history and included papers. A proxy purchase or transit-insurance option should not be mistaken for watch authentication or a mechanical warranty. Ask who can answer condition questions before purchasing an expensive item.

Worked decision

Illustrative example — not a live quote

An assumed ¥100,000 watch with ¥8,000 in service and transport reaches ¥108,000 before payment, duty and tax. A local offer only ¥10,000 above the Japanese listing leaves ¥2,000 for all remaining costs, even before valuing the local warranty.

Questions before committing

  • Is the movement working and is there documented service history?
  • Are the bracelet links, box and papers included?
  • Does the carrier and insurance arrangement cover this declared item and value?

Use the estimate to decide what to verify next

Start with the actual listing price, marketplace and destination. Add the known seller delivery charge and compare a local offer with equivalent condition and accessories. Replace packing assumptions with warehouse measurements when available. If a cost is excluded, the remaining budget is not guaranteed savings; use it to decide whether a quote or further condition evidence is worth obtaining.
