Match the pressing and condition

A title alone is not enough to compare records. Record catalogue number, pressing, format, sleeve condition and the seller’s grading explanation. An obi, insert or original sleeve may affect value. A low-priced record with a damaged sleeve is not equivalent to a clean local copy.

Worked decision

Illustrative example — not a live quote

Assume ¥4,500 for a record and ¥4,000 for combined proxy, packing and transport. The ¥8,500 subtotal leaves little room for import charges if a comparable local copy is ¥9,000 at the same illustrative conversion.

Request suitable packing

  • Ask for a rigid record mailer and protection against movement.
  • Check whether the seller has play-tested it; photographs cannot reveal every playback defect.
  • For several records, request packed weight and dimensions rather than multiplying bare-disc weight.

Use the estimate to decide what to verify next

Start with the actual listing price, marketplace and destination. Add the known seller delivery charge and compare a local offer with equivalent condition and accessories. Replace packing assumptions with warehouse measurements when available. If a cost is excluded, the remaining budget is not guaranteed savings; use it to decide whether a quote or further condition evidence is worth obtaining.
