Choose between EMS and DHL using the parcel you will send and the services actually available to your address. A generic speed claim or a low advertised starting price cannot decide the best route for a specific purchase.
What to compare
| Decision | EMS / postal route | DHL / express route |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing input | Destination and weight bracket, with size eligibility | Packed measurements and weight under the quoted contract |
| Availability | Check current Japan Post acceptance | Confirm the proxy offers the service for your contents and address |
| Arrival costs | Ask about postal handling and import collection | Ask about clearance, disbursement and other quoted charges |
| Timing | Use the current service estimate | Use the quoted service commitment and exclusions |
A realistic comparison method
Assume an EMS offer of ¥4,500 and a DHL offer of ¥4,000 for the same packed parcel. DHL appears ¥500 cheaper. If its quote excludes a ¥900 service charge that the other budget already includes, the advantage reverses. These are hypothetical offers, not published rates. Put both on the same basis before choosing.
Bulky and restricted items need extra care
For a large figure box, calculate dimensional weight before looking at express price tables. For a camera with a battery, confirm the battery configuration is accepted on the exact route. A route that appears in a service list may still be unavailable for those contents.
Customs clearance can affect either route. Do not interpret a transit estimate as the date the parcel will definitely be in your hands, particularly when information or payment may be requested on arrival.
Use LandedCheck as the first comparison
Choose the postal benchmark you want to examine, then replace it with a real quote on the relevant proxy card when you have one. Enter additional charges consistently and keep the quote’s date. If delivery timing matters more than a small saving, use the actual service estimate and your deadline as part of the decision.
