Plan by packed weight and complete set

Books are dense. Ask for the number of volumes, edition and approximate packed weight rather than estimating from one cover photo. A cheap incomplete set can become expensive if missing volumes require separate purchases and another international shipment.

Worked decision

Illustrative example — not a live quote

An assumed ¥3,000 set with ¥500 service, ¥700 domestic delivery and ¥4,000 international shipping reaches ¥8,200 before payment or import charges. Freight is larger than the goods price, so compare a local set on its full delivered cost.

Check the item description

  • Confirm Japanese language, edition and volume numbers.
  • Look for water damage, writing, loose pages and missing inserts.
  • Separate ordinary printed books from stationery or bundles with toys when checking import treatment.

Use the estimate to decide what to verify next

Start with the actual listing price, marketplace and destination. Add the known seller delivery charge and compare a local offer with equivalent condition and accessories. Replace packing assumptions with warehouse measurements when available. If a cost is excluded, the remaining budget is not guaranteed savings; use it to decide whether a quote or further condition evidence is worth obtaining.

Try a starting scenario

Open an illustrative basket for this topic, then replace the price, destination and other inputs with your own. Press Calculate Cost to run it. Article arithmetic uses its stated assumptions; live reference rates and supported model assumptions can produce a different result.
