Start with the delivered cost in CAD, not the yen listing price. Separate the purchase, proxy service, transport, payment costs and import charges so you can see which amounts are known and which still need checking.
Destination rules to check
Canada separates customs duty from GST/HST and applicable provincial taxes. CBSA’s mail guidance describes a general CAN$20 relief threshold, subject to exceptions; above it, do not treat only the excess as taxable. Do not apply special thresholds for eligible US/Mexico courier shipments to an ordinary parcel sent from Japan.
Before buying
- Choose your actual province or territory in the calculator. Ontario is not a national default tax rate.
- Identify the tariff item and qualifying origin treatment. Buying from Japan alone does not establish eligibility for a preferential rate.
- Check whether taxes and brokerage or postal handling are included in the delivery quote. Keep the invoice for review if the assessment appears wrong.
Worked budget in local currency
For an illustrative Ontario purchase, assume a C$200 taxable goods value, verified zero duty and the ordinary 13% HST treatment. Tax is C$26. With C$15 proxy/payment costs and C$35 shipping, the budget is C$276 before handling. A C$300 equivalent local checkout leaves C$24 for handling and other exclusions. This simplified example is not a customs valuation ruling; other provinces and qualifying goods can differ.
Common mistakes for this destination
Printed books need a separate eligibility check; manga bundled with merchandise should not automatically receive the same treatment as a qualifying book. The calculator has a book-treatment choice for this reason. A tax estimate can be included while duty remains unresolved: read both lines, not just the total.
Set up the calculator
Choose Canada, the item type and marketplace. Enter the local checkout price for an equivalent item. If measurements are unknown, the supported packing assumption is a starting point; update it when the parcel is packed. Use Advanced options for the applicable destination choices and a verified duty rate when needed. Add carrier-specific quotes and extra charges on each route instead of assuming every proxy offers the same shipping price.
How to read estimated savings
Compare against a local price for the same condition, accessories and warranty, including local delivery and applicable tax. LandedCheck can show estimated savings with ordinary inputs when the model supports the destination and item. Read the assumptions beneath the result: an estimate is not a confirmed bill. If duty or another required cost is unresolved, a partial comparison shows the remaining budget before those excluded charges, not final savings. An unavailable shipping route needs a real quote; missing cost is never proof of free delivery.
Keep an evidence folder
Save the seller description, invoice, origin information, shipping quote and tax receipt. When an estimate and a final bill differ, these show whether the difference came from exchange rates, parcel size, valuation, tax collection or an extra service. Ask the operator about a disputed line before treating the difference as a calculator error.
Try a starting scenario
Open an illustrative basket for this topic, then replace the price, destination and other inputs with your own. Press Calculate Cost to run it. Article arithmetic uses its stated assumptions; live reference rates and supported model assumptions can produce a different result.
