A low Japanese listing price is a starting point. Compare the camera’s condition, accessories, delivery costs and import treatment with a genuinely equivalent local offer before deciding that it is a bargain.
Build the purchase budget
| Budget line | What to record |
|---|---|
| Goods | Camera body, lens, included accessories and seller tax |
| Proxy | Purchase fee, selected protection, photographs and any inspection charge |
| Delivery | Seller-to-warehouse charge and packed international quote |
| Payment | The actual conversion rate and funding or card fees |
| Import | Classification, manufacturing origin, tax, duty and carrier handling |
Worked comparison with a local camera
Assume ¥60,000 goods + ¥800 proxy fee + ¥1,000 domestic shipping + ¥4,500 international shipping + ¥500 photographs = ¥66,800. Add a hypothetical ¥1,200 payment/FX allowance: ¥68,000. At an illustrative ¥150 per US$1, that is US$453.33. Against a US$550 local offer, US$96.67 remains before import charges and other excluded costs. If verified import and handling charges total US$70, the resulting saving is US$26.67. These are teaching inputs, not a camera tariff or a current exchange rate.
Check condition separately from cost
- Confirm whether the listing is tested, untested, for parts or described as junk. Translate condition notes, not just the title.
- For a lens, check fungus, haze, coating damage and focus operation. For a body, check sensor condition, controls and available shutter evidence.
- Compare accessories: a missing charger or proprietary battery can erase a small price advantage.
- Read return and protection terms before paying. Shipping insurance should not be assumed to cover a pre-existing fault.
Find the relevant duty entry
A digital camera, film camera, lens and accessory can have different tariff treatment. Search the exact product in the destination’s official tariff, and establish where it was manufactured. A Japanese seller is not proof of Japanese origin. For the United States, inspect relevant additional-duty provisions as well as the base entry. The item guidance beneath calculator results points you toward the relevant lookup.
Prepare a usable estimate
Choose Camera / lens, the destination and actual marketplace. Enter a local comparable price if you have one. Start with estimated packing if necessary; replace it with final weight and dimensions when available. Put an actual international quote on the corresponding proxy result. Flag a lithium battery and resolve shipping compatibility with the operator.
How to read estimated savings
Compare against a local price for the same condition, accessories and warranty, including local delivery and applicable tax. LandedCheck can show estimated savings with ordinary inputs when the model supports the destination and item. Read the assumptions beneath the result: an estimate is not a confirmed bill. If duty or another required cost is unresolved, a partial comparison shows the remaining budget before those excluded charges, not final savings. An unavailable shipping route needs a real quote; missing cost is never proof of free delivery.
