Start with the delivered cost in GBP, not the yen listing price. Separate the purchase, proxy service, transport, payment costs and import charges so you can see which amounts are known and which still need checking.
Destination rules to check
For Great Britain, ordinary non-excise goods valued at £135 or less generally have no Customs Duty, but that does not mean no VAT. GOV.UK distinguishes VAT collected at purchase from VAT collected on import. Above £135, duty depends on the goods and origin, and import VAT can include transport, insurance and duty. Northern Ireland requires separate consideration.
Before buying
- Confirm whether the address is in Great Britain or Northern Ireland. The calculator does not silently apply Great Britain treatment to Northern Ireland.
- Keep evidence of VAT already charged, and make sure the prices you enter match that choice.
- For goods above the threshold, look up the commodity code and origin treatment, then ask about carrier handling.
Worked budget in local currency
Assume £200 goods and £30 transport/insurance, with verified zero duty and ordinary 20% import VAT. VAT on £230 is £46. Add a hypothetical £8 proxy/payment cost: the budget is £284 before carrier handling. Compared with a £300 local checkout, £16 remains. A different duty rate increases the bill and may also increase the VAT base.
Common mistakes for this destination
Ordinary printed books and other qualifying products can have different VAT treatment; a mixed collectible bundle needs its own classification. Select VAT already included only when your entered amounts really include the applicable VAT. A proxy fee or Japanese seller tax is not evidence that UK VAT has been paid.
Set up the calculator
Choose United Kingdom, the item type and marketplace. Enter the local checkout price for an equivalent item. If measurements are unknown, the supported packing assumption is a starting point; update it when the parcel is packed. Use Advanced options for the applicable destination choices and a verified duty rate when needed. Add carrier-specific quotes and extra charges on each route instead of assuming every proxy offers the same shipping price.
How to read estimated savings
Compare against a local price for the same condition, accessories and warranty, including local delivery and applicable tax. LandedCheck can show estimated savings with ordinary inputs when the model supports the destination and item. Read the assumptions beneath the result: an estimate is not a confirmed bill. If duty or another required cost is unresolved, a partial comparison shows the remaining budget before those excluded charges, not final savings. An unavailable shipping route needs a real quote; missing cost is never proof of free delivery.
Keep an evidence folder
Save the seller description, invoice, origin information, shipping quote and tax receipt. When an estimate and a final bill differ, these show whether the difference came from exchange rates, parcel size, valuation, tax collection or an extra service. Ask the operator about a disputed line before treating the difference as a calculator error.
Try a starting scenario
Open an illustrative basket for this topic, then replace the price, destination and other inputs with your own. Press Calculate Cost to run it. Article arithmetic uses its stated assumptions; live reference rates and supported model assumptions can produce a different result.
