Buying from Japan to Australia: shipping, duty and total cost

Plan delivery to Australia with a AUD budget example, official customs sources, tax questions and a checklist for comparing with local prices.

Published-source guide · illustrative examples clearly labelled

Start with the delivered cost in AUD, not the yen listing price. Separate the purchase, proxy service, transport, payment costs and import charges so you can see which amounts are known and which still need checking.

Destination rules to check

Australian Border Force distinguishes goods at or below A$1,000 from higher-value imports. Low-value goods generally do not incur border duty and tax collection, but GST may be collected by the seller or platform. Goods above A$1,000 generally require an import declaration and can attract duty, GST and processing charges. Alcohol and tobacco have special treatment.

Before buying

  • Check the consignment value in Australian dollars using the applicable valuation rules; a reference exchange rate is only a planning aid.
  • Find out whether GST is included in the checkout or will be collected by the relevant seller/platform.
  • For higher-value orders, verify duty classification and request the processing and clearance costs as well as freight.

Worked budget in local currency

Illustrative example — not a live quote

For a simplified higher-value case, assume A$1,200 goods, verified zero duty and A$100 international transport/insurance. At 10%, GST on that A$1,300 base is A$130. With A$30 proxy/payment costs, the budget is A$1,460 before processing and other exclusions. A local A$1,550 checkout leaves A$90 for those costs. This is an assumed case, not a universal zero-duty treatment.

Common mistakes for this destination

For low-value purchases, the calculator separates already-paid GST from an amount still to budget. Do not add GST a second time when it is genuinely included. If the collection status is unknown, compare the scenarios rather than treating the lower amount as a guaranteed price. Consolidating purchases may change the consignment treatment.

Set up the calculator

Choose Australia, the item type and marketplace. Enter the local checkout price for an equivalent item. If measurements are unknown, the supported packing assumption is a starting point; update it when the parcel is packed. Use Advanced options for the applicable destination choices and a verified duty rate when needed. Add carrier-specific quotes and extra charges on each route instead of assuming every proxy offers the same shipping price.

How to read estimated savings

Compare against a local price for the same condition, accessories and warranty, including local delivery and applicable tax. LandedCheck can show estimated savings with ordinary inputs when the model supports the destination and item. Read the assumptions beneath the result: an estimate is not a confirmed bill. If duty or another required cost is unresolved, a partial comparison shows the remaining budget before those excluded charges, not final savings. An unavailable shipping route needs a real quote; missing cost is never proof of free delivery.

Keep an evidence folder

Save the seller description, invoice, origin information, shipping quote and tax receipt. When an estimate and a final bill differ, these show whether the difference came from exchange rates, parcel size, valuation, tax collection or an extra service. Ask the operator about a disputed line before treating the difference as a calculator error.

Try a starting scenario

Open an illustrative basket for this topic, then replace the price, destination and other inputs with your own. Press Calculate Cost to run it. Article arithmetic uses its stated assumptions; live reference rates and supported model assumptions can produce a different result.
